Libraries search for better search engines
A lot of things are not relevant, current or unbiased when you just search online,' said Martin Kesselman, a Life Science librarian at Chang Science Library on Cook campus. 'In doing a regular Google search you're not going to find scholarly journals.' In response to this growing concern, University librarians have come up with a compromise - Google Scholar.

    Print often has to go through an editorial or peer-review process that is by-passed in the creation of a web document.

    You are correct that everything in print is not reliable. However, I would say a greater percentage of printed materials are reliable than electronically created media (web-pages) unless, of course, it is the same thing in a different format. Then the electronic is only as reliable as its print counterpart.

    But, my point remains that web pages can be created by anyone, for pennies, in minutes, and there is no review process involved. Print is not so easy. To get a book or an article published it often has to go through editorial or peer review, unless you are doing vanity publishing.

  • At the same time, Google never was meant to have everything they index 100% school friendly, nor student friendly for that matter.

    At least google is making strides in expanding out towards other things instead of just plain old web searches. As long as they keep moving the bar higher, other search engines will do the same and in the end, it will make things better for us, the web browsing generations.
