I'm a graduate library student, and I use Google Scholar all the time. My school subscribes to literally hundreds on on-line journals and databases, and it's not possible to search across all those sources in one sweep. Google Scholar gives me a list of references and lets me view an excerpt or abstract which gives me enough information to decide which articles to pursue in my school's database. Without Google Scholar I'd be drowning right now.

So I guess in some way, the additional URLs "route around" commercial entities.

Google Scholar is great for preliminary research as I can find vast amounts of relevant information in very little time. I can also detect the quality of an article based on the number of citations, and can link straight to the PDF article with minimal effort.

I don't understand how you can say Google Scholar is competing with Elsevier and Thomson and other database vendors. Google Scholar points t ocontent, it does not hose that content. Many things it points to are in databaes run by companies like Gale and other vendors. What do you base your analysis on?
